The Arts and Letters Committee of the Brevard County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated has fulfilled their mission with Art Awakening 2017, which promotes a positive image of African-American and other minorities in our community through the medium of music, dance, drama, poetry and visual arts. The sorority collaborated with the African-American Student Union under the leadership of Ms. Beverly Payne and Student Union President Julian Beachum.

The lobby was very busy as I entered the Bernard Simpkins Fine Arts Center on the Cocoa campus of Eastern Florida State College recently.  Attendees were viewing the art -covered walls as well as the art competition entries that were on display on easels throughout the lobby.  At this point, all juried art had been judged and the winners were about to be announced in the auditorium by Mrs. Elsenna Jordan.

Rev. Art Blatch, pastor of the Christian Life Center in Titusville; Ms. Maggie Forbes, local business entrepreneur and Ms. Michelle Davis, owner of the Essence of Knowledge Bookstore in Cocoa judged the art.

There were eight winning students:

Cambridge Elementary Thomas Makela 1st Place Entry #1
Golfview Elementary Nahielys Garcia 2nd Place Entry #4
Golfview Elementary Samantha Felix, 3rd Place Entry #2
McNair Magnet School Leah Edmondson-Wood 1st Place Entry #8
McNair Magnet School Cato Emerson 2nd Place Entry #7
Space Coast Jr/Sr High Chrysantha Volmering 1st Place Entry #12
Space Coast Jr/Sr High Caitlin Hill 2nd Place Entry #10
Viera High School Michaela Miller 3rd Place Entry #13

The audience was treated to a non-competitive talent show in the auditorium after viewing the art in the lobby. This fun show began with the professional talents of Mr. E. Carl Lewis, a local saxophonist.  A magnificent oration of an excerpt from President Obama’s Final Speech was delivered by Mr. Torrell Brooks.  Mr. Lamont Hogan of Rockledge High School accompanied soloist Hannah Valdez who sang Ach, Ich Fuhl’s from Mozart’s Magic Flute Opera. The Zion Orthodox Primitive Baptist Church Youth Choir sang beautifully. The Vision 2 Praize Mime Group from Macedonia Baptist Church in Melbourne gave an outstanding performance and Miss Alaya Byrd sang a very soul- stirring solo. The Anointed Stars of Titusville gave us an incredible rendition of the Lord’s Prayer. There was a Hip-Hop-Praise dance by Charle’ Alexander and Miss Araina Beachum captured the attention of her audience as she demonstrated her blues style song. Finally, a rap group from Zion Orthodox Primitive Baptist Church had lots of fans in the audience as they closed out another successful Delta project.

Thank you to Delta Chapter President Ms. Marian Jackson and her fine Delta Sigma Theta team for all the good they bring to our community.
