Common Eye Problems and How To Correct Them

As one of the five senses, your eyesight is a vital asset. If you’re experiencing a problem with your sight, here are some of the most common eye problems and how to correct them.

Dry Eyes

Dry eyes happen when tear glands can’t make enough tears or produce poor-quality tears. This condition can create uncomfortable sensations, such as itching, burning, and sometimes loss of vision.

Treatment for dry eyes is relatively simple in comparison to other eye conditions. An eye doctor may suggest using a humidifier in your home, special eye drops that simulate real tears, or plugs placed in tear ducts to decrease tear drainage.

Color Blindness

Color blindness affects roughly 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women. Since there is no current treatment for this vision deficiency, it’s fortunate that color blindness doesn’t drastically affect most people’s ability to live a regular life.

While there is no treatment, color-blind glasses are a great tool for helping those with the deficiency see the full color spectrum.

Presbyopia is the inability to see close objects or small print clearly. Unlike farsightedness, which happens as a result of the shape of the eye, presbyopia is part of the natural aging process.

Treatment options for presbyopia include wearing corrective lenses, undergoing refractive surgery, or getting lens implants.

Refractive Errors

Refractive errors are the most common cause of vision problems. Refraction in the eye occurs when light passes through the cornea and the lens. Refraction errors are a result of the length of the eyeball.

Some categories of refractive errors include nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Treatment options include glasses, contact lenses, or surgery.

Cataracts is an age-related eye problem that creates a milky white lens in the eye. If left untreated, cataracts can lead to severe vision loss.

To correct cataracts, an eye doctor will recommend surgery based on the severity of vision loss.

Looking out for these common eye problems and how to correct them can help keep your healthy and clear vision intact.
