Enhancement Reading Prototype Program

By: Sonya Mallard

The long-awaited tutoring program at Mims Elementary School focusing on reading and science has just launched. A collaborative effort of various organization such as Central Florida Urban League, Harry T. & Harriette V. Moore Cultural Complex, North Brevard NAACP, Brevard Public Schools and North Brevard Parks and Recreation Operations Office met on several occasions to ensure that the students who were in third, fourth and fifth grade at Mims Elementary school received the tutoring they so deserved. Parents were informed and due to COVID19, they practiced social distancing and wore masks as they were being tutored to assist them with reading and science. This prototype program is taking place for four weeks during the summer months, and they anticipate implementing an after-school program at four elementary north area schools when schools reopen.

Mr. Glen Gilzean, President/CEO, Central Florida Urban League provided funding to support this program in the north area. A special thanks to Education Committee Chair; Mrs. Gloria Bartley of the NAACP’s Education Committee, and Mrs. Ruthie Gary, Program Coordinator; Ms. Jhane Carter, Reading Program Teacher; Ms. Samantha Whitworth, Reading Program Assistant; Ms. Sheryl Haskins, Principal of Mims Elementary School; Mr. Sammy Fairclough and staff at Cuyler Community Center; and Ms. Sonya Myrie Catering. All of our partners played a critical role in the collaboration, coordination, and implementation of resources to provide a means to help deserving young students reach their full potential while participating in an exciting learning environment.
