LaWanda K. Smith Scholarship Foundation Presents Annual Award

by Mrs. Charlie Smith

The LaWanda K. Smith Scholarship Foundation is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2020 award to a highly motivated and deserving graduate of Titusville High School. This scholarship was established as a memorial to LaWanda K. Smith of Mims, Florida. She was a 1990 graduate of Astronaut High School and later of Florida A and M University.

Ms. Smith was employed as a Project Manager with the National Security Agency and pursued a Master’s degree at Loyola University before returning to Florida, where she was employed with Brevard Parks and Recreation. Until her death LaWanda maintained her interest in academic and social progress, as well as the achievements of youth and adults with whom she worked.

The 2020 recipient of the LaWanda K. Smith Scholarship is goal-oriented, determined and dedicated to a pursuit of excellence and making a positive difference in the lives of youth. This youth citizen, Ms. Shaelyn Grace Jenkins, graduated with honors from Titusville High School. Shaelyn is the daughter of Charles and Susan Jenkins of Titusville, Florida.

Shaelyn aspires to become an elementary school educator. Many of her school and community volunteer activities have been geared towards her career plans.

Ms. Jenkins served two years as President of Future Educators of America, volunteered at the NASA Child Development Center, participated in the Current Shadow/Teacher Oriented program at South Lake Elementary, as well as several youth ministries at her church.

She wants to become “a teacher that inspires and encourages her students with positivity.” Ms. Jenkins is firm in her belief that “We must prepare and educate ourselves today in order to nurture the leaders of tomorrow.” She plans to attend Eastern Florida State College and Florida A and M University.

The LaWanda K. Smith Scholarship Foundation awarded Shaelyn $1,500. We wish her the best of everything for a bright future.
