The problem may be that you haven’t updated your home recently. If so, you better get on that, because there are some old-school trends out there that people don’t want anymore. If you’d like to learn about some of the outdated home trends that may make your home difficult to sell, be sure to read on.

Wallpaper

Not all homebuyers are turned off by wallpaper, but it does deter buyers who are looking for a more modern décor style. Some wallpapers are worse than others in the eyes of contemporary buyers. Wallpaper borders, specifically, give a home an outdated feel and can discourage buyers. Additionally, floral wallpaper can certainly seem outdated. We suggest removing any wallpaper and repainting the walls if you want to make your home more attractive on the market.

Paneling and Wainscoting

In most cases, people don’t want paneling or wainscoting in their homes anymore. Wainscoting or paneling can still attractive in some cases; for instance, rustic and farmhouse interior design styles tend to use paneling. If your home’s décor already incorporates one of those interior design styles, you should be alright.

Glass Block Walls

If you have an older home with glass block walls, you’ll definitely need to tear those down, because nobody is looking for them anymore. In fact, few home features scream “outdated” more than glass block walls. That said, there could be a buyer out there who would appreciate the style these walls offer—but that buyer will be rare.

Popcorn Ceilings

You probably saw this coming: your popcorn ceilings have got to go. There are several reasons why you need to get rid of your popcorn ceilings. Obviously, some of those reasons are that popcorn ceilings are simply outdated and that nobody wants them anymore. What a lot of people don’t realize is that a lot of popcorn ceilings were installed decades ago, so they may contain asbestos. In other words, popcorn ceilings look bad and can also negatively affect your health.

We know some of these outdated home trends that make your home difficult to sell might be hard to hear. Many homeowners take pride in the work they’ve done to their homes, especially if they’ve lived in their home for decades. However, removing these trends from your home will help your home sell more quickly and for a better price.
