TRIM Excellence Award
Each year, $1,000.00 is sewn into an individual who meets the requirements of the TRIM Excellence Award scholarship, which includes writing an essay. The scholarship was launched four years ago by Bishop Merton Clark to motivate and inspire young people to pursue higher education. The scholarship applications are available April of each year and are awarded in July. The scholarship program is under the auspices of Truth Revealed International Ministries called College P.R.E.P., an acronym for “Providing Resources to Enhance Preparation.” Under this program, a team of leaders are devoted to providing one-on-one counseling, tutoring, mentoring and advising to students in grades 7-12 to prepare them for college. The ministry provides seminars and workshops throughout the year on college preparation topics such as “Choosing the Right College”, “Financial Aid”, “Scholarships”, “Essay Writing” and “Finding Scholarships.” Recently, the program has been co-sponsored by the Florida Institute of Technology for its annual college prep seminar entitled, “Planning for Your Future”. Over the past five years, the program has provided students and parents with a wealth of information about the admissions process, scholarships and college information, free of charge. The event is held every year in the fall. More than 100 students and parents have participated in the event.
This year’s recipient of the scholarship is Cameron Evans. He graduated from high school with a 3.6 GPA from Indian River Charter High School, where he held various leadership positions including Student Council Secretary and Junior Class President. He has volunteered with Habitat with Humanity and Children’s Home Society. He also earned accolades for being on the Honor Roll four years in a row. He is currently attending Indian River State College where he was also dual- enrolled while in high school. He plans to get his Associates Degree in Engineering then pursue his Bachelors and Masters. He plans to stay in Central Florida and develop rides for local theme parks and attractions.
The next seminar, “Planning for Your Future” will be held Saturday, September 17, 2016 at the Florida Institute of Technology, located at 150 W. University Boulevard in Melbourne. The seminar is free and open to the community. Registration is required. There will be speakers to talk on how to find scholarships and effective essay writing. In addition, the seminar will focus on college admissions and financial aid. There will be free lunch. The seminar begins at 10:00 am – 3:00 pm.
