Growing Dreams: FAMU Student’s Push for an On-Campus Greenhouse

By Brian Rice

Florida A&M’s campus is about to become a haven for nature enthusiasts, with a variety of exquisite plants set to bloom, thanks to the efforts of second-year SBI student, gardener, and fashion designer, Bakari Hankins. Hankins envisions transforming the campus within the next two years, with a lush greenhouse filled with roses, sunflowers, violets, and more.

Hankins has been in talks with FAMU’s principal, Timothy Beard, to gain approval for his project. While Beard appreciates the concept, they are ironing out the details. Hankins stated, “Building a greenhouse on campus will be truly meaningful and beneficial for our student body. We’re working through some logistics, but we’re hoping to get this project off the ground in a year or two, if not sooner.”

Local FAMU student Cheyenne Jones admires Hankins, describing him as “a gifted and talented young man.” She notes his passion for nature and adds, “He makes great music you can vibe to, and he has such a big heart and a deep appreciation for the environment.”

Hankins plans to start by planting meaningful plants himself and then open the greenhouse to students interested in getting their hands dirty. He believes in the life and beauty of plants, stating, “Plants are a form of life that many people don’t truly understand, and I want to educate them about it.”

For Hankins, nature is a respite for the mind. He shares, “I find it peaceful and a space to clear my head when I’m outside.”

Hankins’ affinity for plants goes way back. He started planting as a child, adorning his family’s yard. Within two months, his family won the award for the nicest yard in the neighborhood.

Jabari Smith, another local student, attests to Hankins’ commitment, saying, “Bro is gifted, just an all-around good guy with a good heart. He was always into nature and plants, and he hasn’t stopped caring for nature since middle school.”

Hankins summarizes the profound connection he has with planting, “I get peace from it for real, it feeds my imagination and keeps me grounded. I know that if planting does this for me, it can do the same for others.”

The forthcoming greenhouse aims to increase awareness of plants and nature while providing students with a tranquil space to unwind and appreciate the beauty of life’s creations. The project is slated for completion by 2025-2027 latest.
