Simba SC head coach Didier Gomes was at a loss to explain his side’s abject display against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday.
Kaizer Chiefs handed the Tanzanian super club a chastening 4-0 defeat in the first leg of their Caf Champions League quarterfinal and after the match their coach couldn’t account for the performance.
Gomes insisted that the East African powerhouse had not underestimated Kaizer Chiefs.
Simba had not played a competitive match since 27 April, and have seemingly been cruising to the Tanzanian Premier League title, this has led to the suggestion that they believed that it would be easy going at the FNB Stadium.
Simba coach can’t explain performance against Kaizer Chiefs
In assessing the performance, Gomes said that his side lacked the appetite for the individual battles.
“It’s not a good reason to explain why we lost today, we don’t have an excuse, we weren’t tough enough for this kind of match, it’s very important to very aggressive particularly in the duels,” Gomes said in the post-match press conference.
“Kaizer Chiefs, we knew very well, even if they’re in a bad position in the local league. As I said before the match, Chiefs are a very good team, very good offensively and today they have done a clean sheet which proves they are solid.
“Even with their bad situation in the league, we didn’t underestimate them.”
Simba will host Kaizer Chiefs for the second leg of their Caf Champions League quarterfinal in Dar es Salaam at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Saturday 22 May.
Kaizer Chiefs may be in the midst of a terrible slump in the league, but they are enjoying their best-ever run in Africa’s premier club competition.
