Many reports are suggesting that Bill and Melinda Gates are getting divorced due to infidelity and the Microsoft billionaire’s bromance with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
‘Irretrievably broken’: Bill and Melinda Gates’ divorce
According to The Washington Post, Bill acknowledged through a spokesperson that he had an extramarital affair with a Microsoft employee, which Microsoft said led its board to investigate the “intimate relationship” shortly before he resigned from the board last year.
Many reports wonder whether the investigation or the affair, which took place two decades ago, played a part in the decision for Bill and his wife of 27 years, Melinda to get divorced.
In papers submitted, Melinda called the marriage “irretrievably broken”.
“There was an affair almost 20 years ago which ended amicably,” Bill’s spokeswoman, Bridgitt Arnold, said in an e-mailed statement according to the publication.
Members of Microsoft’s board in 2019 looked into a Microsoft engineer’s allegations that she had a sexual relationship with Bill, according to Microsoft spokesman Frank Shaw.
“Microsoft received a concern in the latter half of 2019 that Bill Gates sought to initiate an intimate relationship with a company employee in the year 2000,” Shaw said in an e-mailed statement.
“A committee of the board reviewed the concern, aided by an outside law firm to conduct a thorough investigation. Throughout the investigation, Microsoft provided extensive support to the employee who raised the concern.”
“Bill’s decision to transition off the board was in no way related to this matter,” Arnold said further. “In fact, he had expressed an interest in spending more time on his philanthropy starting several years earlier.”
‘If this makes you uncomfortable…’
Another report says that Gates tried to date women working for him at Microsoft, as well as women who worked at The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
This from NY Mag:
Gates pursued women who worked for him at Microsoft and at the philanthropic institution with his wife’s name on it, asking people out by e-mail — “If this makes you uncomfortable, pretend it never happened,” he wrote in 2006 — and in person.
An ex-girlfriend who never left
What’s more, according to Fox Business, Bill was allowed to spend time with an ex-girlfriend throughout his marriage thanks to a built-in arrangement Bill had with Melinda before exchanging nuptials in Hawaii in 1994.
The arrangement reportedly stated that he and software entrepreneur and venture capitalist Ann Winblad would be able to jet off on annual weekend getaways with each other to pick each other’s brains and bask in the old times they shared while creating new memories of their own.

Marriage advice from the most unlikely sources
In other reports, it is said that Jeffrey Epstein, who died in prison while awaiting trial for child sex offences, reportedly gave marriage advice to the tech mogul.
According to a person who attended the get-togethers at Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse between 2011 and 2014, Bill’s visits to the lair were an escape from his unhappy marriage.
A source told The Daily Beast that the pair was actually very close and that Bill admitted to Epstein that his marriage was “toxic”. A spokeswoman for Bill later said he had never talked in a disparaging way about Melinda.
What’s more, Bill suggested Epstein become involved with the couple’s philanthropic organisation and “rehabilitate his image” after his 2008 conviction for soliciting a minor for prostitution, according to a person who attended the meetings.
Melinda was said to be so incensed by the friendship that she started speaking to a divorce lawyer after the pair’s close ties were first reported by the New York Times in October 2019.
