In a city known for its challenges, Keyshawn Phelps has emerged as an inspirational figure, defying the odds, and making a significant impact on his community. Growing up in Newark, New Jersey, Keyshawn faced numerous hardships, but he refused to allow them to define him. Today, he is not only a successful engineer, but also a mentor and community activist, dedicated to empowering youth and reshaping mindsets.
Keyshawn was born and raised in one of Newark’s toughest neighborhoods. With limited resources, high crime rates, and underfunded schools, the odds were stacked against him from the start. However, he possessed a determination that became the driving force behind his exceptional journey. Recognizing the importance of education, Keyshawn immersed himself in his studies. Despite the challenges of his environment, he excelled academically. His dedication and perseverance paid off when he studied Systems Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology and received his master’s degree in systems engineering and received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia State University. A member of Omega Phi Psi Fraternity.
Keyshawn’s pursuit of excellence continued throughout his college years. He delved into the field of engineering with a passion, determined to utilize his skills to make a difference. Graduating, he secured a job at a renowned engineering firm, where he quickly rose through the ranks. Currently working as a Systems Architect Engineer with experience as a Systems Engineer at Northrop Grumman dealing with test and integration.
While achieving personal success, Keyshawn never forgot where he came from. He recognized that countless young individuals in Newark faced similar struggles and lacked the guidance and support he was fortunate to receive. Thus, he decided to become a mentor, offering guidance and inspiration to empower youth. Through workshops, mentorship programs, and motivational speeches, Keyshawn became a beacon of hope for many young people in Newark and Central Florida. He shares his own story of overcoming adversity, conveying the message that anyone can achieve their dreams with determination, perseverance, and a positive mindset.
Keyshawn’s impact extended beyond mentorship. Recognizing the need for systemic change, he became actively involved in various community initiatives. He advocates for improved education funding, outreach initiatives, clothes drives, and programs aimed at STEM for kids in schools. Keyshawn’s efforts caught the attention of local leaders and organizations who recognized his dedication and commitment. He was invited to join task forces and committees working towards positive change in Brevard County. Through collaborative efforts, he plays a pivotal role in reshaping our youth.
