Palm Bay, FL For more than two decades, the Brevard Caribbean American Sports and Cultural Association (BCASCA) has brought the community together to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year’s 21st Annual MLK Memorial Program and Breakfast, held on Saturday, January 17, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Palm Bay, continued that tradition, serving as both a celebration and a call to reflection.

The annual gathering drew families, city officials, faith leaders, law enforcement and youth from across Brevard County, all united by Dr. King’s enduring message of justice, service, and equality. More than a commemorative event, the breakfast has become a space where culture, history, and community pride intersect, reinforcing BCASCA’s longstanding role as a bridge between generations.

A highlight of the morning was the performances by local youth and community groups, showcasing talent and creativity while emphasizing the importance of nurturing young voices. Performers included Best Friends for Jesus Christ, Palm Bay Elementary, Discovery Elementary Dance Performers, Jaylon McSween, a 12-year-old steel pan musician, and Khalfani Major, a 19-year-old singer who had the audience clapping and singing along. These performances celebrated culture, encouraged youth participation, and brought the spirit of Dr. King’s vision to life.

Recognition of service and excellence remained a cornerstone of the event. The BCASCA Martin Luther King Jr. Award was presented by Jennifer Walker to Franceska Puebla, a sixth-grade student at Palm Bay Elementary School. The award honors students who exemplify leadership, strong academic performance, kindness, and acceptance of others, qualities that reflect Dr. King’s vision in action.

The program also celebrated outstanding community leadership through Community Service Awards, introduced by presented by Kay Maragh and Derrick Jones. This year’s honorees included Chief of Police Mariano Augello, Paul Edwards, Donny Felix, David Jones, Jeffrey McLeod, Joseph Miller, and Kevin Vaccianna, each recognized for their dedication to service and their positive impact within Brevard County.

The Fay John Award, one of BCASCA’s highest honors was awarded to Courtney Morris, BCASCA Vice President, in recognition of his exceptional leadership, commitment, and service to the organization and the wider community.

The keynote address was delivered by Seeta Durjan Begui, who reflected on the shared history between Caribbean immigrants and the Civil Rights Movement. She reminded attendees that many Caribbean Americans are beneficiaries of the sacrifices made by those who fought for civil rights, emphasizing gratitude, responsibility, and belonging.

Her message resonated deeply with the audience, reinforcing the idea that Caribbean Americans are an integral part of the American story.

Now in its 21st year, the BCASCA MLK Memorial Program and Breakfast stands as a cornerstone event in Palm Bay. More than a tribute, it serves as a reminder that Dr. King’s legacy lives on through unity, cultural pride, and a shared commitment to justice, values that continue to guide BCASCA’s work and the community it serves.
