Harriet Girls Club Spreading Their Wings Throughout Central Florida
By: Sonya Mallard
The Harriet Girls Club was founded in November 2020 by Mrs. Cheryl Lawson-Young. The organization is located in Tampa Florida with the support and sponsorship of Essential Event Inc. Harriet Girls Club Values and leadership are based on the Legacy of both Harriette V. Moore and Harriet Tubman exemplified. In January 2021, two Youth Directors were chosen Michala Dudley and De’sha Dukes who are both high school students that serve to provide peer to peer advocacy and activities for the young ladies. The program is designed for young ladies between the ages of 5 to 16 years old. The Harriette V. Club ladies ranges in age from 5 to 11 years old, and the ladies that are 12 to 16 years old are called Harriet Tubman. The Principles that the girls are trained to live by are: Health, Advocacy, Respect, Responsibility, Interpersonal Relationships, Environmental Concerns and Trust. The exciting part for Mrs. Cheryl Lawson-Young is that at the end of every meeting or event the girls want to stay longer, and not only that but the parent’s involvement is amazing. Mrs. Lawson-Youngs next vision is to replicate this program in several other cities throughout the State of Florida. Her efforts in 2021, will be to focus on strengthening the Tampa Chapter and creating new chapters in North Brevard and Tallahassee.
